Spreading God's Love Thru Prayer

Daddy’s Little Girl – Part 5

Good Morning, and praise the Lord.  We are continuing with our series on Daddy’s Little Girl.  Please turn with me to Genesis chapter 27.

Genesis 27

And it came to pass, that when Isaac was old, and his eyes were dim, so that he could not see, he called Esau his eldest son, and said unto him, my son: and he said unto him, behold, here am I. And he said, Behold now, I am old, I know not the day of my death: Now therefore take, I pray thee, thy weapons, thy quiver and thy bow, and go out to the field, and take me some venison; and make me savory meat, such as I love, and bring it to me, that I may eat; that my soul may bless thee before I die. And Rebekah heard when Isaac spake to Esau his son. And Esau went to the field to hunt for venison, and to bring it. And Rebekah spake unto Jacob her son, saying, behold, I heard thy father speak unto Esau thy brother, saying, bring me venison, and make me savory meat, that I may eat, and bless thee before the Lord before my death. Now therefore, my son, obey my voice according to that which I command thee. Go now to the flock, and fetch me from thence two good kids of the goats; and I will make them savory meat for thy father, such as he loveth: And thou shalt bring it to thy father, that he may eat, and that he may bless thee before his death. And Jacob said to Rebekah his mother, behold, Esau my brother is a hairy man, and I am a smooth man: My father peradventure will feel me, and I shall seem to him as a deceiver; and I shall bring a curse upon me, and not a blessing.  And his mother said unto him, upon me be thy curse, my son: only obey my voice, and go fetch me them. And he went, and fetched, and brought them to his mother: and his mother made savory meat, such as his father loved.  And Rebekah took goodly raiment of her eldest son Esau, which were with her in the house, and put them upon Jacob her younger son: And she put the skins of the kids of the goats upon his hands, and upon the smooth of his neck: And she gave the savory meat and the bread, which she had prepared, into the hand of her son Jacob. And he came unto his father, and said, my father: and he said, Here am I; who art thou, my son? And Jacob said unto his father, I am Esau thy first born; I have done according as thou badest me: arise, I pray thee, sit and eat of my venison, that thy soul may bless me.  And Isaac said unto his son, how is it that thou hast found it so quickly, my son? And he said, because the Lord thy God brought it to me. And Isaac said unto Jacob, come near, I pray thee, that I may feel thee, my son, whether thou be my very son Esau or not. And Jacob went near unto Isaac his father; and he felt him, and said, the voice is Jacob's voice, but the hands are the hands of Esau. And he discerned him not, because his hands were hairy, as his brother Esau's hands: so he blessed him. And he said, art thou my very son Esau? And he said, I am. And he said, bring it near to me, and I will eat of my son's venison, that my soul may bless thee. And he brought it near to him, and he did eat: and he brought him wine and he drank. And his father Isaac said unto him, come near now, and kiss me, my son. And he came near, and kissed him: and he smelled the smell of his raiment, and blessed him, and said, see, the smell of my son is as the smell of a field which the Lord hath blessed: Therefore God give thee of the dew of heaven, and the fatness of the earth, and plenty of corn and wine: Let people serve thee, and nations bow down to thee: be lord over thy brethren, and let thy mother's sons bow down to thee: cursed be every one that curseth thee, and blessed be he that blesseth thee. And it came to pass, as soon as Isaac had made an end of blessing Jacob, and Jacob was yet scarce gone out from the presence of Isaac his father, that Esau his brother came in from his hunting. And he also had made savory meat, and brought it unto his father, and said unto his father, let my father arise, and eat of his son's venison, that thy soul may bless me. And Isaac his father said unto him, who art thou? And he said, I am thy son, thy firstborn Esau. And Isaac trembled very exceedingly, and said, who? Where is he that hath taken venison, and brought it me, and I have eaten of all before thou camest, and have blessed him? Yea, and he shall be blessed. And when Esau heard the words of his father, he cried with a great and exceeding bitter cry, and said unto his father, bless me, even me also, O my father. And he said, thy brother came with subtlety, and hath taken away thy blessing. And he said, is not he rightly named Jacob? For he hath supplanted me these two times: he took away my birthright; and, behold, now he hath taken away my blessing. And he said, hast thou not reserved a blessing for me? And Isaac answered and said unto Esau, behold, I have made him thy lord, and all his brethren have I given to him for servants; and with corn and wine have I sustained him: and what shall I do now unto thee, my son? And Esau said unto his father, hast thou but one blessing, my father? Bless me, even me also, O my father. And Esau lifted up his voice, and wept. And Isaac his father answered and said unto him, behold, thy dwelling shall be the fatness of the earth, and of the dew of heaven from above; and by thy sword shalt thou live, and shalt serve thy brother; and it shall come to pass when thou shalt have the dominion, that thou shalt break his yoke from off thy neck. And Esau hated Jacob because of the blessing wherewith his father blessed him: and Esau said in his heart, the days of mourning for my father are at hand; then will I slay my brother Jacob. And these words of Esau her elder son were told to Rebekah: and she sent and called Jacob her younger son, and said unto him, behold, thy brother Esau, as touching thee, doth comfort himself, purposing to kill thee. Now therefore, my son, obey my voice; arise, flee thou to Laban my brother to Haran; and tarry with him a few days, until thy brother's fury turn away; until thy brother's anger turn away from thee, and he forget that which thou hast done to him: then I will send, and fetch thee from thence: why should I be deprived also of you both in one day? And Rebekah said to Isaac, I am weary of my life because of the daughters of Heth: if Jacob take a wife of the daughters of Heth, such as these which are of the daughters of the land, what good shall my life do me?

We all know this story about Jacob and Esau, but today I want to talk about the backstory with Rebekah.  She and Isaac had been married for many years, and were now old, and Isaac was dying.  He wanted to bless Esau with the firstborn blessing, because he came out first before his twin, Jacob.

Now Esau loved the outdoors and was rugged, but Jacob wasn’t into any of that.  There was a marked difference between the two men.  When Isaac told Esau what he wanted done, Rebekah heard him.  For some reason, she decided to share this information with Jacob, so that he could get first dibs on making this elaborate favorite dinner of his father, and get the blessing before Esau got back.

The question is, why she was being so crafty and deceptive and showing favoritism towards Jacob.  Didn’t she love both of her sons equally?  Apparently not, because when Jacob tried to talk her out of it, because he felt that he would be cursed instead of blessed, she reassured him to do it, and that she would take the curse on herself.

Mothers and their sons…if we have multiple children, we have no business being partial to one over the rest.  It causes resentment, dissension and hatred by the others, feeling unloved and unwanted, because of our treatment of the golden child.  It’s wrong and ungodly.  That was a free one, and it won’t cost you anything.

So we know that Jacob came back, Rebekah cooked the food quickly, and sent him into his father’s chamber, so that he could feed him.  Now keep in mind that Isaac had lost his sight, and usually when you lose one sense, the other four go into overdrive.  He couldn’t see Jacob, but he recognized his voice.  His son lied to him, wearing Esau’s clothes, and told him that the Lord gave him success to grab the venison and cook it quickly.

Against Isaac’s better judgment, he gave the firstborn blessing to Jacob, who stole it from his brother Esau.  We know the outcome, but let’s get back to Rebekah, who started the beef between the twins.  I asked some questions that I really want you to take time to think about.

As we know, our child or children have different personality traits, some that they may have inherited from us or from their dad, the good, the bad and the ugly.  How many know that when you are married and you have a baby, this is what you look for as they grow.  You beam with pride and joy as they get older, because they are your mini me.

Unfortunately, if you have gone through a divorce, a death or a broken relationship, and the father of your child or children is no longer around or emotionally available, then you bear the burden of trying to explain why Daddy isn’t there anymore.  Ladies, hear me clearly today.  The absolute worst thing you can do is dog their father out.  I don’t care what he did to you or to them, vengeance is mine, says the Lord, and He will repay if it’s appropriate and necessary.  Newsflash, this is not your decision.

Another thing you have to be careful of is to take out your hurt, pain, anguish and anger on your kids, especially your male children.  If their father was less than amazing, please let them find out on their own as they grow up.  Don’t paint a negative picture of them, and then take it out on them.  It’s not fair.

And yes, I’m going to go here, ladies.  If your case is a break up, do you know why?  Was it an affair, irreconcilable difference, illness or death?  Let’s break it down.

  1. Affair: Were there signs? Could it have been prevented?  Did you ignore the alarms?  Can we get down to the nitty gritty for a moment?  Let’s face it.  If you weren’t the offender, don’t take it at face value that the guy was a dog.  Were you getting along before it happened?  Was it just a one-time thing, or was he creeping all along?  What was your role in it?  Can you honestly say that you were surprised, or were there underlying issues in your marriage or relationship that you ignored, because you just had to have your way?  Let me say something right here that is very important for you to look at.  If you weren’t showing and expressing love on the regular, including in the bedroom, you’re opening a door for the enemy to come in and let Sister Susie sweep your husband off his feet, because you won’t pay attention to him, or you’re always critical of what he isn’t doing or saying to make you happy.  Can you honestly take responsibility for the breakdown?
  2. Irreconcilable Differences: Did you go to counseling to work things out, or did you dig your heels in the sand and say that it’s him, not me. If an affair wasn’t the reason why you got here, then what?  If you have a problem, we have a problem.  If I have a problem, we have a problem.  99% of the time, it’s not one sided.  Both parties have to take responsibility for what happened.  If you are both Christians, then you’d better take it to the Lord in prayer, and in pastoral counseling, as well as individual and couples counseling.  You might be surprised at what you will discover, and it can save your marriage.
  3. Illness: The marriage vows say in sickness and in health. No matter whether it’s a cold, or a life threatening illness, it’s your job to stay there and be a servant to your spouse, in order to comfort them and help to make their quality of life enjoyable.
  4. Death: If you hung in there and your spouse passed away, do you cherish the memories as you grieve, or are you secretly glad that they’re gone. That’s real.

At the end of the day, Daddy’s little girl, you don’t want to be like the Real Housewives of Atlanta, New York or any other city with a bougie attitude, and creating drama and stress wherever you go with your husband, children, extended family and friends because of your thoughts and feelings.  If you know that you can go from 0 to 100 in 2 seconds flat, you need an attitude check and adjustment by the Father Himself.

Because of Rebekah’s favoritism, she created a blood feud for many years that lasted past her life.  When the boys finally came back together, they reconciled, but their descendants didn’t.  Women, we don’t know the power we hold.  We need to make sure that we use it for good and not for evil intentions.  May the Lord bless you, and have a great weekend.
