INDIVIDUAL ACCOUNTABILITY

WILL THERE BE ANY EXCUSES WHEN WE STAND BEFORE GOD?
BIBLE READING: Romans 14:1-23
KEY BIBLE VERSE: Yes, each of us will have to give a personal account to God. (Romans 14:12)

WE WILL APPEAR ALONE BEFORE GOD.
Each person is accountable to Christ, not to others. While the church must be uncompromising in its stand against activities expressly forbidden by Scripture (adultery, homosexuality, murder, theft), it should not create additional rules and regulations and give them equal standing with God’s law. Many times Christians base their moral judgments on opinion, personal dislikes, or cultural bias rather than on the Word of God. When they do this, they show that their own faith is weak. They do not think God is powerful enough to guide his children. When we stand before God’s court of justice (see 2 Corinthians 5:10), we won’t be worried about what our Christian neighbor has done.

GROUP ACCOUNTABILITY

HOW DO INDIVIDUAL CHOICES AFFECT A GROUP OF PEOPLE?
BIBLE READING: Joshua 7:1-15
KEY BIBLE VERSE: Israel has sinned and broken my covenant! They have stolen the things that I commanded to be set apart for me. And they have not only stolen them; they have also lied about it and hidden the things among their belongings. (Joshua 7:11)

OUR ACTIONS OFTEN AFFECT OTHERS.
Why did Achan’s sin bring judgment on the entire nation? Although it was one man’s failure, God saw it as national disobedience to a national law. God needed the entire nation to be committed to the job they had agreed to do-conquer the land. Thus, when one person failed, everyone failed. Achan’s sin was not merely the act of keeping some of the booty (which was allowed in some cases), but disobedience to God’s explicit command to destroy everything connected with this city. His sin was indifference to the evil and idolatry of the city, not just a desire for money and clothes. God would not protect Israel’s army again until the sin was removed and the army returned to obeying him without reservation. If Achan’s sin went unpunished, unlimited looting could break out. The nation as a whole had to take responsibility for preventing this. God is not content with our doing what is right some of the time. He wants us to do what is right all the time. We are under his orders to rid our lives of anything that hinders our devotion to him.
BIBLE READING: Judges 6:1-16
KEY BIBLE VERSE: “Sir,” Gideon replied, “if the LORD is with us, why has all this happened to us? And where are all the miracles our ancestors told us about? Didn’t they say, ’The LORD brought us up out of Egypt’? But now the LORD has abandoned us and handed us over to the Midianites.” (Judges 6:13)

ACCOUNTABILITY MEANS TAKING PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY FOR NATIONAL SIN.
Gideon questioned God about the problems he and his nation faced and about God’s apparent lack of help. What he didn’t acknowledge was the fact that the people had brought calamity upon themselves when they decided to disobey and neglect God. How easy it is to overlook personal accountability and blame our problems on God and others. Unfortunately this does not solve our problems. It brings us no closer to God, and it brings us to the very edge of rebellion and backsliding.
When problems come, the first place to look is within. Our first action should be confession to God for sins that may have created our problems.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS, GOD’S WORD ON
To accomplish something is simply to complete a task, whether it is finishing the dishes or winning the Super Bowl. We accomplish many things each day, most of them mundane and lacking any eternal significance. The real struggle comes in knowing how much we should try to accomplish and dealing with the feelings of frustration and inferiority when we don’t accomplish what we hoped to or when we don’t achieve the level of accomplishments that others do. No awards, no promotions, no great victories-does this mean we have failed? The Bible mentions many physical accomplishments, but it also highlights spiritual accomplishments, which we so often overlook-an active prayer life, Christian maturity, telling a neighbor about your church, a moral victory over temptation, a tender word of encouragement to a child. These are the kinds of accomplishments that need to take priority in our lives.

WE MUST HAVE THE RIGHT PERSPECTIVE ABOUT ACCOMPLISHMENTS.
Ecclesiastes 12:13 . . . Here is my final conclusion: Fear God and obey his commands, for this is the duty of every person.
Obeying God is life’s greatest accomplishment.

HOW DO WE MAKE THE MOST OF OUR ACCOMPLISHMENTS?
Ecclesiastes 4:9 . . . Two people can accomplish more than twice as much as one; they get a better return for their labor.
Accomplishments are multiplied through teamwork. It is impossible for one person to play a duet or trio. It is hard to play football or soccer without teamwork. It is hard to have a happy marriage if only one mate works at it. How encouraging to note that two people can actually do more than twice as much as one, as long as they are pulling in the same direction.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS COME WITH GOOD PLANNING.
Isaiah 25:1 . . . O Lord, I will honor and praise your name, for you are my God. You do such wonderful things! You planned them long ago, and now you have accomplished them.
God planned before he accomplished, a good model for us to follow.

IS ACCOMPLISHMENT JUST THE FRUIT OF HARD WORK, OR IS THERE SOMETHING ELSE TO IT?
Romans 1:17 . . . This Good News tells us how God makes us right in his sight. This is accomplished from start to finish by faith. As the Scriptures say, “It is through faith that a righteous person has life.”
Getting ready for heaven, preparing for eternity in God’s heavenly home, is not accomplished by any work we do but simply by faith, believing that Jesus Christ died for our sins so that we wouldn’t have to. Salvation, this greatest of accomplishments, is not the work of our hands, but the work of God in our hearts.

IS IT WRONG TO BE PROUD OF OUR ACCOMPLISHMENTS?
1 Corinthians 4:7 . . . What makes you better than anyone else? What do you have that God hasn’t given you? And if all you have is from God, why boast as though you have accomplished something on your own?
There is a healthy satisfaction of accomplishment that includes thanksgiving to God for what he has done through us. But it is arrogance to think the deed was done all by ourselves.

WHAT IS OUR GREATEST ACCOMPLISHMENT? HOW DO WE ACHIEVE IT?
Romans 1:17 . . . This Good News tells us how God makes us right in his sight. This is accomplished from start to finish by faith. As the Scriptures say, “It is through faith that a righteous person has life.”
Salvation, the greatest of accomplishments, is not the work of our hands, but the work of God in our hearts.
Ecclesiastes 12:13 . . . Here is my final conclusion: Fear God and obey his commands, for this is the duty of every person.
Obeying God is life’s greatest accomplishment.

HOW CAN I DO A BETTER JOB OF ACCOMPLISHING THINGS?
Isaiah 25:1 . . . O Lord, I will honor and praise your name, for you are my God. You do such wonderful things! You planned them long ago, and now you have accomplished them.
Accomplishments come with good planning. God planned before he accomplished, a good model for us to follow.
