1 Corinthians 2:12-16 (NRSV)
Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit that is from God, so that we may understand the gifts bestowed on us by God. And we speak of these things in words not taught by human wisdom but taught by the Spirit, interpreting spiritual things to those who are spiritual.
Those who are unspiritual do not receive the gifts of God's Spirit, for they are foolishness to them, and they are unable to understand them because they are spiritually discerned. Those who are spiritual discern all things, and they are themselves subject to no one else's scrutiny.
"For who has known the mind of the Lord
so as to instruct him?"
But we have the mind of Christ.

Thus says the LORD: Stand at the crossroads, and look, and ask for the ancient paths, where the good way lies; and walk in it, and find rest for your souls.

MY 6-year-old granddaughter, Maya, and I enjoyed working together on an activity sheet of interesting tasks for kids. Looking for hidden words was our favorite thing to do. She was excited to find each hidden word and was proud to spell it. Coaching Maya to understand the puzzle was food for my soul. Children can learn focus, attention, and problem-solving skills by searching for hidden meanings.
As adults we sometimes experience puzzling circumstances and need discernment when confronted with confusing choices. Figuring out what is right can be difficult. However, God desires to coach us in discernment, understanding, and wisdom. The Holy Spirit can make clear to the humble listener what is hidden to rebellious and prideful people.
God promises to help us discern the right course of action. We are not left alone to solve the moral and ethical questions pressed upon us. Being still before God and asking for the Spirit's counsel in what to do will bring us illumination.
Prayer: Spirit of light and truth, give us the insight we need to do what is right and pleasing in your sight. Deliver us from moral and spiritual puzzlement, and lead us toward understanding. Amen.
