PRAYER AND FASTING

  .....The United Church of Christ; Sojourners, a progressive Christian commentary on faith, politics and culture that seeks to build a movement of spirituality and social change; Color of Change, an Activist and Social organization; and Move On, a political organization, have joined efforts for encouraging Christians to fast and pray during the month of April or as long as it takes for the type of transformation in legislators who seek to cut wide swatches out of the socially beneficial funding and environmental protections previously legislated into law. They never even consider cutting spending in the military portion of the budget, which is less often used for actual defense -- but more often used for imperialistic intrusions into oil-rich countries for the benefit of Wall Street, Oil industries, war and gun businesses, as well as regular surreptitious espionage dealings and maneuverings and covert control of foreign governments world-wide.

.....Sojourners posed the question for us: What Would Jesus Cut? That is the crux of the problem that the Christian must pursue. What are the humane methods of resolving a national budgetary crisis which the Republicans only became interested in after their fall from office in 2008, seemingly oblivious to the fact that it was their party in the first place that sent the budget reeling into superspin, with loopholes for the rich, two middle east wars, and a disregard for finances until the Democrats came to office. The sheer hypocrisy that they now project criticism from, and laying the blame upon others without reproach is maddening. The Tea Partiers also have no trouble in breaking the back of the country in order to so-call "cure" it. This condition did not happen in two years and it will take more than a year to reform it. Sometimes the future of this country looks so drear that one could hardly desire to want to continue to be a part of it.

.....When this state of mind happens, that particular someone is indeed in need of prayer at the highest level. So when these groups call for a time of Prayer and Fasting for the month of April, can we do no less than jump squarely into that movement? Religion in Action is how I feel about it, and it is high time that this pugilistic match of contention was promoted nationwide. If there are others out there who feel the need to help this country survive as a Humane Society that the founding fathers and the best philosophical thinkers would hope it to become, I urge you to join us in Fasting and Prayer at least on Mondays during the month of April. This actually may be considered a part of the Spiritual Warfare that is spoken of in Biblical references we abide by. .
