CHOOSING a COMMUNITY
The story of RUTH takes pace sometime during the period of the judges. These were dark days for Israel when ‘’every man did what was right in his own eyes (judges 17:6,21:25) There was some who still followed GOD.
In this story we see how 3 people remained strong in character and true to God even when the society around them was collapsing
The key people in this text is Ruth and Naomi
Elimelech his wife Naomi and two sons traveled to Moab because a famine in Israel there sons married MOAB women, keep in mind Moab was one of the nations that oppressed Israel during the period of the Judges (judges3:12ff)
Laps of time her husband and sons died.
In this strange land Naomi is a widow .A widow was taken advantage of or ignored. They were poverty stricken God’s law provided for widows ,the nearest reality of the dead husband should take care of the widow, but Naomi had no relatives in Moab and she did not know if any of her relatives was alive in Israel. Here she is no other sons for Ruth or Orpha to marry so she encourages them, to remain in there homeland and marry Orpha agreed, which was her right
But Ruth was willing to give up the possibility of security and children in order to care for her mother-inlaw Naoma . These girls was married to God’s chosen men this land and community is a pagan land no wonder the subject is Choosing a Community.
God was working it out for Ruth. Ruth came to know the God of Israel through Naomi. The old allowed her to see, hear, and feel all the joy in her relationship in God . We can see through Ruth that God accepts all who worship him no matter race sex, or nationality, she belong to a race often despised by Israel .She chose to follow God
Read Ruth 15-18
16. “For wither thou goes,I will go,and where thou lodgest,I will lodge thy people shell be my people, and thy God my God’’
If all mother in-laws was like Naoma.
