THREE BASIC ELEMENTS OF REPENTANCE ACCORDING TO THE BIBLE

A GENUINE SORROW TOWARDS GOD

2Co:7:9: Now I rejoice, not that ye were made sorry, but that ye sorrowed to repentance: for ye were made sorry after a godly manner, that ye might receive damage by us in nothing.

2Co:7:10: For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death.

When sin is committed one should not only be sorry that they carried out the act but their conscience should be shaken to the extent where they turn to God for forgiveness.

A GENUINE SEPARATION FROM SIN

Heb:6:1: Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God,

Ac:26:20: But shewed first unto them of Damascus, and at Jerusalem, and throughout all the coasts of Judaea, and then to the Gentiles, that they should repent and turn to God, and do works
meet for repentance.

One should separate themselves from works of the flesh which is considered to be dead works and connect thems

A GENUINE SUBMISSION TO GOD’S WILL

Ac:9:6: And he trembling and astonished said, Lord, what wilt thou have me to do? And the Lord said unto him, Arise, and go into the city, and it shall be told thee what thou must do.

1Th:1:9: For they themselves shew of us what manner of entering in we had unto you, and how ye turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God;

We should look at Paul’s example when God revealed Himself to him he did not hesitate, he suddenly realize that God called him for a purpose.
