Deuteronomy 4:31

Deuteronomy 4:31 (NIV)

For the Lord your God is a merciful God; he will not abandon or destroy you or forget the covenant with your forefathers, which he confirmed to them by oath.

This is why King David could depend on the Lord the way that he did, because of the relationship he had with Him.  Was he perfect?  Absolutely not!  But, because he was described as “a man after God’s own heart”, the Lord blessed his entire lineage, as long as they followed in his footsteps, and maintained a right relationship with God.  So, we have this promise, and we know how good God is, and how He shows His loving kindness to us at every moment.  Faithful and merciful is our God!
