The lesson for Sunday, July 3,2011 is "Dealing with Disobedience." Scripture: Joshua 7:1, 10-12, 20-26.
OVERVIEW
I have always heard that,"what you don't know, can't hurt you." Not in the case of our lesson. After the fall of Jericho, remember Joshua cursed the city and everything was to be destroyed, except the silver, gold, and vessels of brass and iron that was to go in the Lord's treasury and Rahab and her family.
The background of the lesson was that Joshua sent out spies to the city of Ai, the report came back that the city was small and that it would only take about 3000 men to destroy it. So 3000 soldiers went to take the city, but they were defeated and the Isralis ran for their lives. This shattered their confident! They were feared among the nations. Now, they are running!!
This brings us to the lesson. Joshua did not know, that there was sin in the camp. God was not pleased and allowed the Isralites to be defeated because of disobedience. Joshua prayed to God and asked God what was he to do now that Israel fled from her enemies. God told Joshua to get up and that his men were cursed.
Joshua had to go before his people and find out who had stolen and disobeyed God. One by one each tribe came until the guilty person was found. It was Achan of the tribe of Judah. He saw a beautiful Babylon robe, (what we call today, a designer robe),silver and gold worth about $700.00. He wanted it so bad, that he took it and hid it among his things.
For this disobedience, Joshua had to deal with this situation. He had Achan, all his sons, his daughters, his oxen, his donkeys, sheep, his tent, and everything he had was brought before the people. Where Achan, his family, animals, tents, everything was stoned to death and burned. The way Joshua dealt with sin in the camp satisfied God.
How do we deal with sin in our lives? How do we deal with disobedience to God's words and laws? I thank God for Jesus, because he became sin for us, died on the cross, and redeemed us back to the Father.
Now, do you think "what you don't know, can't hurt you?" (Selah).
one spiritual lesson is to learn in this lesson is Jesus and sin cannot live in the same church or home . You can pretend to be a christian ack like a christian, preach like a preacher, teach like a teacher. But you cannot pull it off with God. Joshua didn"t know the problems but God did.
