Hi All,
The lesson for Sunday February 20, 2011 is: "Jesus Came to Serve." Scripture: Mark 10: 36-45.
OVERVIEW
When we are in a position of authority, whether on a job or in Church, our family and friends seems to think that they have an edge over everybody else. I've often heard that it is bad to do business with family and friends. Family and friends think that you ought to cut them some slack no matter what.
In this lesson, we find Jesus in the same position when His cousins' mother ask Him to let her two sons James and John sit on the right and left hand of Jesus. This special request or favor was asked simply because they were relatives. I'm sure we can all relate to this on our jobs and at our churches or establishments. What's the old saying, "it not what you know, it's who you know." Can you just feel the other disciples indignation?
Jesus said that they did not know what they were asking. The lesson for us as believers, is to know what you are getting yourself into before you go asking for a place of position. Jesus asked the two brothers, can you drink of this cup and baptism? Literally, the brothers did not know that the cup/baptism meant His suffering and death on the cross. Ironically, the two brothers said, Yes, we can (sounds familiar?). Be careful what you ask for, you just might get it, but not in the way you think.
Jesus answered and said to them, indeed you will drink the cup and you will be baptized as I am baptized. How about, James was the first apostle to die a martyr's death and John was exiled or banished to the Isle of Patmos for the gospel.
Jesus admonish His disciples that in His Kingdom, the chiefest shall be a servant to all. Jesus did not come to earth to be put on a pedestal or to lord over people in a dictatorial manner. His sole purpose was to give His life as a ransom. What about us today, are we serving God and others as we should?
