The lesson for Sunday, October 16, 2011 is "Wisdom for Aging." Scripture: Eccl. 11:9-10; 12:1-7,13.
OVERVIEW
In today's society, everything is geared toward youth. There are multi-million dollars industries that sell products to the consumers for staying young and looking young. All kinds of wrinkle creams for the face, neck and hands. Botox for face lifts, etc. This lesson is reminding us that while all the commercial sells are good, you are still going to get old, considering the alternative.
The lesson states that our limbs are going to become shakey, our hair is going to turn gray, our eyes are going to become dim, our teeth are going to become weak and few, our hearing is going to become impaired, our walk/steps are going to become slow, we are going to have sleepless nights and that our sleep will be short for we will rise up early in the morning. Have you ever wondered, when you are on your way to work and the traffic is slow, usually it's a little old man or woman driving 20 miles an hour holding up traffic. You say to yourself, what in the world is she/he doing out here so early in the morning! Now you know.
The lesson reminds us that we are to serve God while we are yet young and when we are old, the lessons we learned in our youth will sustain us. When you are older, you can't do the things you use to do, you can't run as fast, you can't get up as quick, you can't eat certain foods. Now as you age you take it easy. Your mind is more on serving God.
No one like to think that as we grow older, we face our own fralities, we face the reality of our own demise. That one day we will return back to the earth and the breath will go back to God who gave it. Solomon advises us to be wise in old age is to prepare for this day while
