An Instructional Dream
Gospel of Matthew 1:20-21(NKJV)
20 But while he thought about these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take to you Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. 21 And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name JESUS, for He will save His people from their sins.”
Matthew 1:1-4:16
Reading the opening Gospel of Matthew 1:1-4:16 establishes that God originates and guides the events of Jesus’ life. It presents Jesus as God’s chosen agent, commissioned to manifest God’s saving presence in a sinful imperial world. Jesus and his followers are set in continuity with God’s covenant relationship with Israel. 1:1 Jesus is the Messiah (Hebrew) or Christ (Greek) a term meaning “anointed” or “commissioned. The term is used for kings (Ps2:2), prophets (1Kings19:16), priests (Leviticus4:5), even the Gentile ruler Cyrus (Isaiah 44:28-45:1) ----Agents whom God sends to do God’s Will. A descendant of Abraham Jesus continues God’s promise to Abraham. God will bless all nations of the earth with life (Gen12:1-3), not just the wealthy roman elite and their allies.
Matthew 1:1-17 emphasizes God’s purposes rather than the biological connection. It provides the interpretative framework for the Gospel. It displays God’s purpose for the world; His covenant relationship with Jesus; and with Israel not Roman.
The Significance of a God Sent Dream
Matthew 1:18-19
Just as the Spirit, the agent of God’s life-giving purposes was active in creation (Genesis 1:2) so now affects Mary’s pregnancy. Imperial figures such as Alexander the Great and Augustus were said were said to have been conceived by a divine being .But Jesus’ greatness will not consist of military dominance but by life giving service(20:25-28).
Joseph being a righteous man planned to dismiss Mary quietly and not expose her to public disgrace, BUT praise God then came the dream! And thank God Joseph was obedient !
Matthew 1:20-21
But while he thought about these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take to you Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. 21 And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name JESUS, for He will save His people from their sins.”
The angel reveals God’s plans by naming the child Jesus in Hebrew Yeshua and explaining the name’s meaning. This is Jesus’ “job description”. It describes the central perspective of his whole ministry.

What is your God sent dream?
Did God give your dream a name?
Are you being obedient?
Will your obedience to your God sent dream with a God given name STILL LIVE after you?
